Yeah just swap like for like! Knock the trip off first and just wire up same as ones you remove!

Do you not have to earth the plate with metal fronted switch/plug sockets? or am I confusing myself?

Yep. If your replacing plastic with metal you will need to connect an earth wire between the backbox earth connection and the new facia. If your backbox's aren't earthed (some lighting circuits dont have an earth) then you either need to run new cable with an earth, or stick to plastic.

Yep as oceansoul said, you cant fit metal face plates to switches or sockets without an earth present.
Dont just connect an earth wire from backbox to faceplate if there isnt a earth present in the backbox in the first place as it wont do anything!
If your not confident you should make a note of which wire goes where or you could end up with problems.
