I always say if a woman is "man enough" to hit a man then she should expect one back, then a woman cracked me in the jaw and I couldnt bring myself to hit her , and the reason she hit me was because I laughed at her when she slapped me  .

I would feel the same way... the only problem with that situation is the fact you're on a train.
If you were on a street - you could do it and walk away, but on the train - you're going to end up unable to escape with a crying girl on the floor and a load of witnesses who say you hit her.
At that point, no one will care what an annoying bint she was being - they'll only accuse you of beating her up. What's worse is some of the guys jump to her defense and you end up in a fight with some guys.
That said - what the big bloke did was spot on... Because he rised to it, told her to stop being stupid and acted like he would do something - she backed down. Where as the little weed who she originally targeted remained looking weak and thus she kept coming back to him - as ultimately in a power trip, she would get no negative action from winding him up.
Believe it or not, so much we do is related to the way the animal kingdom declares territory / has a power struggle. Sometimes the worse thing you can do in a situation is back down and be really passive like the weed.
