What's the crack with this?

I intend on buying a few clothes, trainers and also 2 or 3 iPad 2s for me and some colleagues.

The clothes and trainers I will wear out there and will just come back in my suitcase so should be fine. But I'm guessing the iPads will have to be declared which basically makes it pointless me buying them.

Saw this:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/arriving/arrivingnoneu.htm

Sounds like I would have to pay 2.5% customs duty and 20% Import VAT

Bit of a gamble if you get a random customs search though isn't it?

Yeah, i'd say its a bit of a gamble. But, the iPads will be cheaper out there then what they will be here when they become available, so, the worst that can happen is that you'll be paying roughly the same amount for it in the end. But, on the other hand, you might not get stopped, and therefore get them into the country fine

A suitcase full of iPads might be suspicious if you got caught. But you probably won't, think I'm going to get one next month when I'm over

Can't you just stick one iPad in a cover and carry it as hand luggage say you went out with it? dump the box etc

It's what i've done in the past except i've posted the box/manuals/warranty back to the UK. Chances are you'll be alright, but i'd spread them around between the suitcases and perhaps take one onboard as hand luggage.

Some stuff is, other stuff can be just as expensive. As far as I'm aware they advertise stuff for sale over there without the VAT added on, so anything you buy you have to add the VAT to.

i got my laptop for about £250 over here the equivelant was near £400

Best bet is to speak to the shop you purchjase from and get a form to claim back the tax (about 6-8% depending on the state) then whack it in the suitcase and dont declare it. that way save even more. If you do declare it though make sure the retailer does help you get the tax back.

Customs can trace where iPads etc were bought off there serial number and could charge retrospectively even if the ipad appears to be used.

However you will probably be fine, what airport will you be using?
