My old queen applied for a job at the pub down the road, only a cleaning thing, she doesnt even need to work its really just to keep her busy in the day gives her something to do.
So she applied for it then heard nothing back, then out the blue they ring up the other day and say theyve got some work for her can she come down, so she goes down under the impression this is some sort of job offer and she does a couple of hours work, after she asks when the pay is, and they say no shes not going to get paid this was just a taster to see how she got on and that they have a few other tasters this week before letting her know if shes got the job

she did get owned, but I'd assume as they didn't tell her beforehand it was a taster thing, she could probably get the money back for that 1 shift

i doubt it, if she's just been asked to come down and do some work and she's agreed to that they've done nothing illegal. She shouldn't have assumed it was paid.
Same happened to me, I went for an interview with a door to door sales company. It was an 'on the job' interview and lasted for 5 hours without pay. To top if all off they told me that I would have to make my own way back to the town from about 20 miles away on a bus after getting a lift out to the area of work, the wankers.

I think this is general practice for most small firms and is legal. We have had people do abit of work for free to get a feel for them and I know of some other businesses that do the same (for example a cafe looking to hire someone tested out potential candidates before offering them the position). Employing anyone is a total cunt regardless of what job it is so I dont blame them for getting a feel for whoever has applied for the job.

If they send a special officer to investigate don't expect much sympathy

Nope. Entirely their choice and tbh, if they were going to offer employment thereafter its doubtful they'd mug her off in the first instance.
Most likely scenario, regular cleaner wasn't available so they went through the application pile to find someone to scam to cover it.
