normally your advised your at risk and offered if possible options to go for other jobs available
If not successful your are made redundant or you can offer to take reduncy
However you must take a representive normally to ensure you get the package yoru after i.e discussing holiday payment if you havent taken your quote for the period in notice, bonus pay if thats applicable and also leave date etc

depending on number of people being made redundant depends on consultation period too
once consultation period is over you are then served notice of redundancy
Consultation is usually the time to ask questions and speak to unions etc
also usually this is the time where people may be pooled or redeployed for other roles
oh and people usually are given a choice at that point as to whether they want to take voluntary redundancy

you laugh but when redundancies hit our call centre after those who took voluntary went it meant they only needed to make one person compulsory which ended up being this right weirdo guy and he was mega pissed. i did have visions of him coming in and shooting everyone!
