Did anyone change his engine to a 1.6 16v GSI? How does this engine perform? Is it powerfull enough to compete with standard CRX Del Sols and to beat them?
Thanks.

Btw how much bhp does a standard 1.6 16v (GSI) have pls? If the engine runs with NOS it might be able to beat the Del Sol, I guess!

a GSi 1.6 is 105Bhp as standard but is pretty tunable because its a DOHC. The better choice is the 2.0l 16v (150Bhp as standard). With this engine and some light tunning you could be looking at 200Bhp per ton which will beat quite alot of cars on the road

By any chance does anyone know the prices for a 1.6 16v and 2.0 16v engines?
Cheers.

C16XE = 109bhp - 60mph in 9.0 - top end 121mph
X16XE = 106bhp - 60mph in 9.5 - top end 119mph
1.2 to a 1.6 is a good conversion. Wont beat a CRX though. However, spend £1k on the 1600 16v lump (on the right mods) will see it to around 135-150bhp. Torque wont be as good as a 2.0litre (C20XE), but thats understandable.
1.6 16v turbo = bad idea. Too many problems unless ur prepared to be shelling out ££££ on a decent upgrade, none of this courtney crap!
2.0litre turbo, bad idea also really. Spin up easy, insurance nightmare.
From a 1.2, a 1.6 is a good conversion. Andy H is runnign 220bhp on Throttle bodies from his 1.6 16v, 60 should be hit in around 5 secounds now, top speed at last recording in 1.5 miles was 135mph. Slow they are not. De-tuned from 150bhp to conserve fuel and lower emissions, and to stop showing up teh 2.0litre redtop brother.

Redtop (2.0litre) will be around £400, but higher milage.
1.6 16v, sort after engine, around £400-£500

I got a quote to drop a 2.0l lump into a corsa for £5000. This includes,
2.0 16V (not turbo)
Induction Kit
Full stainless steel exhaust
Superchip = 185 BHP
Chrome Rocker Cover

Thanks for the quote Corsa_Project.
If i just replace the 1.2 8v engine to a 1.6 16v, i could use the same induction kit and exhaust sytem. I would probably need to change the manafold.
I would have to include a rev counter too as the 1.2 8v model does not include one.
But i guess that would be enough to make the 1.6 16v running. (i know if wont be the fastest 1.6 16v but i'm trying to find out the minimum requirements to make the engine work.)
What do you think guys?

And what about the gear box? My gearbox seems to have short ratios. I guess i would need to make some alterations in it aswell.
Changing an engine seems to be a complex job!!
Any clue on how long it take to change the engine(from a 1.2 to 1.6)?

U can buy a C20Xe, with Gearbox and wiring loom etc from around £400-£600. Fitting kit is £500 ish and people like Lee Mitchell and Beardy fit them for about £500.
U can take your car there one day, and drive away a few days later with a 2.0litre conversion for around £1500. £5000 is a Courtnay bite your arm off if your a mug type price.
A 2.0litre conversion should cost around £1500-£2000 to be done.

Konrad - if you've a short ratio gearbox, keep it.
Do you not have the option of buying a standard GSi?

the 20xe is from the Cavalier, Astra mk2/3 and Calibra. That sort of price will see a 80k miler, but remember that these engines are solid as anything when looked after and will see 150k miles with ease. Konrad it would be so much simpler to get hold of a GSi or Sport.

Ian - my current gear box that i have is of a 1.2 8v. I dont have a long ratio gear box yet. But if i use my current gear box wont i have more acceleration (if this gear box matches with the gsi)? I think i would have a problem with top speed then.

Yeah, thats what i think is the best, a GSI. I guess a 2.0ltr drinks too much fuel!! and i use my car everyday.

the 1.2 gearbox is totally unsuitable. You will eat through it in no time. And the ratios of the 1.2 gearbox are really really shit. You should stick with the f17 gearbox from the GSi really, or you wil be forking out for a new one anyway. Also make sure you are using the 1.6 driveshafts since the 1.2 ones will not be up to the job.
