TBH i'm a bit fucking clueless about personalised plates
I've been searching for a plate for the wife for ages now and i've found it on EBAY. Basically the guy has it up for £600 and i've offered £500. He's accepted
Firstly how do i go about getting it ON a car??! He says he will send me the retention certificate...is this all i need to then legally OWN the plate and all i have to do is get the plates made up and put on?
Is there any hidden charges that i'm missing that will bite me in the arse from the DVLA??
Bit worried about spending 500 notes on a piece of paper that might not come as i'll be buying outside of EBAY

If you're worried about sending the guy £500, don't send the guy £500.

Id suggest doing the deal person to person. Then you know you are getting what you are paying for.

He's dealing with it outside of ebay Jambo, I thought that meant no protection.
Not meaning to kick anyone anywhere or be too negative, just that a £500 gamble to get it's a bit much.

If you have the retention cert then you go to local DVLA office with the logbook and MOT of the car you are putting it on, and say Id like to put this plate on this car. The last time it was retained should have cost £105, which should include the cost of putting it on another car. So it shouldn't cost you any extra.

If it's already on retention then you need the £25 change of nominee fee.
There's a section on the V317 which he must also sign in this circumstance.

Surely Paypal is all the protection you need?

Thanks guys! Esp. Andy and Ian
In regards to handing over £500 I meant I wanted to be 100% sure I knew what I was getting before handing over the money.
How long will it take before I can put it on the car?? Ie if I buy a car from a garage on say a Saturday, can I have the plates made up and collect it the next Saturday with them on??

No, they may register it for you on the new plates but genrally takes about 2 weeks to get the new tax disc through and then you can put it on. the V5C would come through a few weeks after. Remeber the insurance company needs to know as soon as you transfer the plate over.
