I thought if you book train tickets in advance you were meant to be able to get them cheaper?

Seems to make little to no difference if I book tickets for tomorrow or for in a months time. £83 return from Oxenholme to London Euston regardless of how near or far ahead I book using the trainline

Depends really, you might be able to get it cheaper if you book the trip as several singles rather than as one fare. Trains tend not to be that cheap, yet they still wonder why people prefer to drive places.

They set a certain number of advanced tickets which are cheaper. If it's only a months time they might be all sold out.

Yes and even sometimes going from different stations can be cheaper.

For example, if I wanted to go to my mum's in Slough there are two journeys I could take:

Stourbridge Junction > Birmingham New Street > Banbury (or Oxford) > Slough (expensive)

Stourbridge Junction > Worcester Shrub Hill > Slough (cheaper)

Second journey is a bit longer time wise but is a few quid cheaper.

Only specific trains @ specific times are cheaper, i got a £85 ticket from Basingstoke > Waterloo > Euston > Crewe for £35 just before christmas there was one for £24 but it was on the wrong day

I'd say just have a hunt around http://nationalrail.co.uk

Try the Virgin website rather than Trainline. Can be cheaper.

Royal wedding is in about a month isn't it? could be a reason they wont be cheaper.

I find I need to book a few months ahead to get good deals when going to manchester etc.

There's not really a lot of options going from here. It's Oxenholme only

Single tickets work out the same, its the west coast mainline so it's a direct service. No changes.

Yeah I'm probably going a week, maybe 2 before then I'm a bit stuck really as I'm not going to find out when I'm going till about a week before at most.

Going to stay with a mate for a few days that lives in Crouch End. He knows he is getting a week off sometime before the wedding in April but with him working at the Ritz he doesn't know the exact date till shortly before. So looks like I'm going to be paying £83 by the sound of it.

You're right. Can do it for £71 return through Virgin

But that's advance tickets so I bet I won't know when I'm going early enough to be able to book that

Trains are a rip off full stop.

I live within 5 minutes walk of Bedford station and want to travel to somewhere within 5 minutes walk of Leagrave station.

Off peak - £7.50 return. Its only 15 miles each way, thats £3 in my car, quicker and more comfortable

Just found a one way ticket for £21 on trainline

Google trainline, in the results it comes up with 'best fare finder'.

Go to that link. Punch in your route and dates. It comes up with a list of trains and times. The cheapest is the evening trains at £21.00.

You can buy that and print your tickets at the station.

The good bit is you can catch any train on that date as the tickets only have the date on it, not the time. You will get given a reservation ticket but just bin that.

Ive done that about 10 times now to get £10 tickets to london. The conducters dont ask questions, as far as they are concerned you have a valid ticket, for that route, for that date.

Youve just saved yourself £50.

So it doesn't matter that what it lists on the website is for a train leaving Oxenholme at 20:24? I could get a train in the afternoon on at that same day instead using the cheaper ticket? Likewise on the way back it says departs 22: 00 and arrives 7: 08 the next morning Obviously don't want to be travelling on that train.

That sounds good if true! Cheers!

Yep! Done it loads of times now and never had any problems. Like I said the ticket only has the date and journey printed on it.

Works a treat!

That would come in at £59 return. Result. I'm definitely going to try that!
