need to book a cheap room end of the month but im skint untill payday, my question is if i book it now will they take the money straight away or will it be when i check out?

How do I pay for a room?

All rooms are payable via credit or debit card at the time of booking or by eVoucher where applicable. Saver and Sale rate rooms cannot be refunded. Please check the details carefully before you complete your booking. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Switch/Maestro Solo/Electron and Visa Delta/Debit cards.

See if http://www.booking.com/ has something in your price range. They only take your card details down and pre-authorise it a day or so in advance. Then you just pay the hotel as normal when you leave

If you book direct with Travelodge they'll take it on the day you book.

I work in Travelodge, phone 0871 984 8484 (Central Reservations), they'll ask you for your card number to 'hold' the room, then you can pay when you arrive!
