Whats the cause of orange peel on a cars paintwork? What ways are there to treat it? Can it be sorted or does it generally need respraying?

Orange Peel is usually when a car hasnt been sprayed very well, maybe at the wrong pressure for example. You can usually get away with a good flat and polish to get the paint smooth again!

Failing that, completely flatting the panel down and repainting is the more expensive option.

Yeah my car has been resprayed, not a great deal of orange peel but just around the rear quarter which after a good clean kind of annoys me. Wondered if there would be a cheaper option to getting it like the rest of the car as apart from that its in great nick and comes up really well.

as said above a good flat and polish could solve it but it just depends how rough the orange peel is as if its too rough you could need to go too deep to get it smooth.

In modern cars it's down to using more hardener than lacquer to speed up the production process. Also down to lack of refinement / flatting back and polishing up once initially sprayed.

On a respray it's probably not having the gun set properly or not thinning the paint right.

Apparently Fiats have it bad, like on the back of my old Punto, you can kind of see it in this pic:
