Hi All
Just got my p45 through the post from my old job... I'm now self employed for a different company, what do I do with the p45? keep it for my records or give it to the company I contract for?

I decided not to point that out. Bad enough he was asking what to do with his P45 in the first place

you shouldnt get a p45 when changing contractor, are you registered with CIS for your tax? What do you get to prove your tax paid?

I've been self employed working through an agency on PAYE, they asked for my P45.

This whole thread reeks of tbh
I predict that Mark will get stung for a fucking great tax bill next december and there will be threads on here asking what he does about it.

I think in some cases like Alan's you can ask HMRC to collect any taxes through PAYE even if you are self employed, if you are earning up to a certain amount.
The whole self employment thing needs sorting out really, it's confusing as fuck to people new to running their own businesses.

not really, you can be self employed and work for some one as a contractor, as mark is doing, i work a regular mon - fri job for a plumbing firm but under my own name, i use my own vehicle, insurances and registration, i get paid weekley but pay my own national insurance, for tax mark should get a statement from his company proving how much tax they have deducted and paid from your wages, are you registered with cis?

It's not that difficult if people actually bother to read the advice on direct.gov or give HMRC a call.
Trouble is that people ask on here instead and get 20 different answers from people who don't really know either.

I don't see why what I wrote would contribute to the thread being full of facepalm-ness tbh. You obviously don't know as much as you think you do.

It makes people feel good about themselves, even though none of them seem to have adequately answered your question. Weird.

whats so hard to grasp about being given a p45 from an old job where he was employed (not self employed) and is now self employed since leaving said job that has sent him a p45?
alot of people not reading it properly imo.
as said thought just keep it safe.

Tax doesn't have to be taxing.

Sorry, I've not made myself clear.
Basically last year I was self employed and the job ended. I then went and done a normal job working at a nightclub (not self employed) whilst I was looking for a new placement. I have since found one and ended the nightclub job hence the reason for the p45.
