temp got upto just before red then i switched it off. can normally tell if its an air lock cos the heaters tend not to blow warm but they did
just been and borrowed a multimeter and checked the power.
there's power to the switch but no power from the switch to the fan. think im just gunna run a wire round somewhere
cheers anyhow
EDIT: just for any help to anyone with similar problems. there's two wires going into my switch (on the bottom left of the radiator) one brown with white stripe on it and one just brown. the brown one has no power to the fan

rite, im not an experct when it comes to electrics, far from it but...
the switch has two wires going into it
1) brown and white
2) just brown
the brown and white wire has over 12v power but the brown hasn't got any
the fan has two going in (cant remember colours off the top of my head) but one has power and one doesn't
iv ran a wire from one on the switch that doesn't work to one on the fan that doesn't work, ran the car rite upto temp (just before the red) and no joy
then, i kut that wire and earthed it and tried again. no joy
please someone put me out of my misery.

im having the same trouble done the same as you and its still not working so wat iv done is the connector going to the fan switch on the rad unpluged that run 2 wires from it to a switch in the car and it works fine thats the easy option
but in the haynes manual it says it could be a bad earth or low voltage power to the fan switch or its a fuse wich you have checked but i dont fancy chasing wires and all that 1 more sensor iv got to try befor i give up and thats the 1 where your thermostat is im guna have a go tomorrow and ill let you know how it goes

take the plug out the fan switch. start the car, put a peice of wire in the plug so it bridges the 2 wires. if fan works its the fan switch etc

yeah, thats going to by my last option. did you put a fuse in it though??
also, isnt there a sensor on or near the injector rail that'll have something to do with it to.
and cheers, let me know how you get one as i haven't tried the one on the thermostat housing yet

right m8 here we go. did you change your fan switch sensor on the bottom driver side on the rad if so you know when you took it out did water piss out the hole if not then its bloked down that corner
i found this out after i brought a new thermostat and it was still over heating so my m8 asked me if water came out myn because water surpose to come out and no water came out myn so i took the rad off and had a look and i was shocked as it was blocked and it was like wet sand or something so the water couldnt get to the sensor as it was all cacked up it took me half an hour to dig it all out and blasted water threw the rad for 10mins fitted it all back together coolant in no air locks let car get up to temp 100`c and fan kicked in straigt away and turned off at 95 at this point i had a big smile on my face
i changed :
fan switch
thermostat
tried air lock test
and tested all conections for power
and there was 1 more thing in the haynes and that was (blocked radiator)
as thats the lowest point of the rad any crap in your water system will sit ther and block up
but sand i had no clue where that was from so it works for now just orded me a new rad to be safe
hope this as helped you m8 if you have no blockage the i dont know m8
here is a pic after i cleaned half of it out

ahh, rite, now you've got me puzzled. i really dont think it'll be blocked as its a brand new rad and switch, but my car did have aircon as theres still a switch on the dash but my OLD rad (wich looked original) didnt have that air con switch hole in it . new one doest ether. but seen as its a new radiator it'll not be clagged up.
really apreciate the responce mind , but problem still not solved . iv just orderd and new temp switch (the one that goes on the thermostat) il see if that solves it
the thermostat must be working as the pipe coming out of it heats up when the thermostat opens around the 85_88'c area.
just wondering if there's another temp switch that may effect this??
my mate who knows his novas inside out rekons theres one near or on the injector rail but he isnt sure on the 16v engines
ultimate cheers

Easy wiring 101
Battery 12v to Fan Plug wire 1
Fan Plug Wire 2 to Rad Switch wire 1
Rad Switch wire 2 to Earth
IF still dosent work then Fans broken OR Rad Switch Broken
Not sure on colours you may have to swop fan ones over if the fan go's backwards.

see my car had air con but the car seems to of had a front end shunt and its been removed, yet it didnt have that extra hole for aircon in the normal rad, unless it was replaced, i dont know
what solved the xe conversion then?
