Would dropping from 6th to 4th at motorway speeds cause high pressure within the engine?
It seems my oil filler cap burst off doing so.

Whats left of it

Happened on the corsa, emptied litterally everything. God knows why, loose cap, headgasket, blocked pipe? Who knows!

It blew the top part clean off the threaded part richc. The threaded part was still in the cam cover.
Hes lucky it didn't work its way into the head.

It was tight on. I needed a hammer to get the thing loose last time i topped the oil up and i used the hammer to tighten it up again. Was definitely tight on.
Would a loose cap pop off though? If theres no pressure in the head then what difference would it make? Plus the only oil that was lost was a small drop where the cap burst off yet you would think there would be loads over the engine if there was pressure.

it doesnt need to be tight like that !

most caps are designed to breathe a little anyway my guess is you damaged it tightening it up with a hammer

If you had to hammer it off.,then on,you have probably split the plastic where it has came away from the threaded part.Could have told you that yesterday if you had said.

Fingers were quite sore hence the hammer. I hand tightened it the time before that.

Like i say what difference would it make if theres no pressure.

The oil caps on them are a pig to get off, there's no comfortable way of gripping it to twist it.

Exactly so a few taps from a hammer isnt going to effect it, unless theres a specific way of tightening them using only the correct amount of fingers.
