I wouldn't have said that a 3 layer steel HG's needed for an XE tbh
I got this kit mate: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-REDTOP-C20XE-C20LET-HEAD-GASKET-SET-BOLTS-L-/380253295205?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5888dcd265
And the stuff that came was FAI branded, basically what the motor factors round here would give you for £50 minus the bolts. I've done two headgaskets with the stuff and I've had no problems with it.
Depending on whether it's early or late you'll see another identical listing to that one with an 'E' at the end - this is important because the bolts are different sizes.

If just doing the headgasket don't bother with a steel one,
As ideally you need to deck the block as well,

I've bought a few from "The gasket shop" on eBay, did my Focus, Puntos, Corsas and they're all still sweet.

Another recommendation for autovaux here.
The stuff they sell is OE spec or genuine GM and the prices are comparable with that ebay stuff. The best bit about ordering from Autovaux is you will usually get your parts the very next day.
