I know this is a potential tin of worms tbh.

As some may know i recently got another 'B GSi.

I was planning to drive it daily, whilst externally tidying it up, and rebuilding the C20LET i got along with it.

On Monday morning i jumped in it and attempted a journey to work which resulted in me getting about 200 yards before a large bang and loss of drive, the car turns over with no compression but the timing belt is intact so suspecting the bottom pulley woodruff key has went.

This got me thinking, this is the 3rd X16XE that i've had that has pretty much died on me with no warning.

Are C16XE's any better ?

At the minute i am thinking i'd like to keep the GSI more original and put the LET in something else.

Whats peoples experience's with C16XE's ?

unreliable engines imo, most of them seem to have some sort of misfiring through the range issue

One of my mates has had 2 X16's in his sport so far and is looking for a 3rd.

I'd hate to buy a C16 and wish i'd just fitted the bigblock.

how long ago thoug? im sure then they were fairly young they were ok, but with age a lot seem to suffer with misfiring and hesitiating, i know mine did, and ojc's seen others report the same on here, i replaced everything i could think of on mine and it didnt cure it, only thing we could think was maybe the blocks go porous or something

I bought a GSi with the c16 in it, and had the same problem which you mentioned about your x16 about the compression loss etc. Rebuilt the engine and it seems to be working ok apart from this pressure build up i get which is piston ring related.

I doubt there is much in it apart from the heads is it not?

I never had one single mechanical issue on my gsi which was a c16xe.

I done just shy of 100 000 miles in it in 9 years of ownership.

Considering as well the fact that the last 20 000 it was used and abused extremely hard on track and done over 20+ trackdays.

I wouldn't say they are unreliable engines.

C16 is the same as a x16, Just got a different inlet/ecu etc and not as much emmissions stuff.

Will still come up with the same issues, and be a even older engine. Personally though I don't think baby xe's are that bad, Had reliable ones other than normal issues.

I hate x14/16's!! Had 6 so far and they've all broke in one way or another. All seem to drink oil/water as well

I wouldn't say either one was any more or less reliable.

Depends how soon you want to LET it.

Small block to replace that engine is cheaper and quicker.

True.

Even a XE feels like a 1.2 in comparison with a ph2 LET.

I have never worked on such an awkward engime.

Took the head off to inspect the damage tonight, would have been quicker dropping it out going by my personal best for removing an X16

Its just put me right in the mood for building the LET.

why dont you sort the x16xe use it as a daily runner, then build the let into a proper high spec one, then drop it in,
