a mate is after one and that is his budget. i reckon with the price of diesel its not worth getting one so if you have any other suggestions, but basically it has fairly cheap to maintain and good on motorway

If he doesn't care about image etc 406 HDi. Seriously comfy, good economy. Froggy electrics bit worrying but just check everything before buying, especially xmas tree rear lights.

if its just for example a work and back commuter so he can have a weekend toy ? a 106 or saxo 1.5 straight diesel is good, i know french as some say but cheap enough to pick up and do about 60mpg

just a thought though

Any VAG will be a dog for that money

Yea French or Vauxhall for £2k and good nick.

Bought my 2.0DTI Astra on a Y plate with 85k 2 years ago for £2k, on runs it still easily gets 50mpg

If he gets a Passat make sure its had the timing belt done.

IIRC they have the same longitudinal layout as the A4 making timing belt changes a lot more labour intensive than equivalent engined Golfs which are transverse.

At 120k it should be due one (60k intervals)

I picked up my Bora for 1800. 98k, FSH, years MOT and 6 months tax. did 1600 miles so far,averaging 50mpg(top of 64mp) and nothing gone wrong .yet.
