Hi. I'm looking to upgrade to a Nikon D3000 from a Fujifilm S1730. I just want to know, what telephoto lens could I get for around £125 that has an in-built autofocus motor (as the D3000 does not have one built in). I just want to know is the D3000 a good camera for general photographic use, but mainly landscape and motorsport photography.

Any and all sensible advice and help will be listened to and very much appreciated.

D7000 is far superior.

D7000 would blow my budget apart. I'm looking at the Nikon D3000 because it's good value for money.

Save for longer

I'm looking at a D7000 as a second shooter to my D700 as it has fantastic high ISO shooting capability!

I've got a D3000 and got back from holiday last night, have 400 pics to go through and pick out the good ones Have got plenty of landscape pics and have a fair few motorsport from PVS and TVL shows.

Not sure what telephoto lenses are available for that price range but have a look on Jessops and Warehouse Express I got the Nikon 35mm F1.8 (£180ish) and 50mm F1.8 (£100ish) lenses recently and they're both top notch

Get a Canon 450D and don't worry about autofocus issues?

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Canon of some sort, but I need autofocus lenses for the rallying.

Iirc all Canon bodies have an AF motor in them as opposed to a few Nikons (including D3000) that don't, so any lens you buy for a Canon will be able to AF.

are you buying new? because the 3100 is out now, may be hard pushed to find a 3000 now, unless people still have them knocking about.

new with the 18-55mm vr lens the 3100 is about £425, you'd be looking at a 1100d with the equivalent lens is about £450. second hand who knows lmao

both prices were from camerapricebuster.co.uk btw

For motorsport you should be manually pre-focussing anyway.

What Tiger said is right actually, remembered this morning that I had to manually focus at Castle Combe because the AF didn't want to co-operate.

I've tried manual focus before, but autofocus seems to be a lot easier to use. Does anyone here use the Canon EOS 450D?

For motorsport you should be manually pre-focussing anyway.

Why? I use AI Servo AF and never had a problem.

Depends what and where you're shooting.

AI is usually spot on unless you're tracking something very quick or in an unusual position. Manual pre-focus just limits what you can shoot tbh.

My mates got one. Personally I find it a bit small compared to my 40D or old 5D. Other than that its as good as you would expect.

Would it be a good first DSLR?

Don't see why not. Get down your local Jessops and give that plus the similar Nikon version a go.

Don't buy in store though, get online and order from whoever is cheapest on http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/

Nikon D40, fantastic camera one of the best Nikon have produced. Can be had for not much 2nd hand.

Only 6mp but doesn't really matter unless you are printing over A3 or cropping massively.
