my grass is a mess right now:

last year when we moved in, it was very light in colour and had bald patches and lots of weeds.

i used a weedkiller/grass seed product by evergreen but it seems to have burned the grass. the bits which hae survived are very vibrant and healthy, but i've used 2 more lots of grass seed since aswell as shit loads of water and it doesn't seem to be coming back to life.

any ideas? will it need completely re-turfed? if so, how much roughly would it cost? grass area is approx 22ftx25ft.

When I re-seeded part of our lawn last year it took ages for anything to happen. I kept watering as Colin has said and once it started the grass grew really quickly.

Rememeber when watering that seed will float so make sure the water doesnt puddle shifting the seed. Best bet is a light covering of lawn sand or sived soil.

This.

or, drench the lawn first, then seed, then water the following day.

You think thats bad Ben, you should see the state of mine, I have a dog that loves to piss like a racehorse in one place, but a different place every night, so Ive big circles of brown where it's overkill and then the grass is growing at the same rate as the mould in my old student flat around the outside

What you have done is when you put the weedkiller down, you have put it down in just one patch, What you should have done is spread it on an area around the weed and also on the weed very lightly.

The only way around this is to either re seed the area and wait or get some rolls of turf and cut out the area and replace with the turf. Just get about 3 or 4 rolls. I got some off a local place for £1 a roll as it was the last on the pallet, Cheap enough and easy to do aswell.

cheers bonney. i did re-turf some bald patches last year and they have turned out fine so may pop down b&q and get a few rolls and see how it goes.

Don't bother with B&Q stuff, Its a little overpriced.

Find your local small garden supplies place and see what they have left on a pallet, They will probably want rid of it to get a fresh pallet full in. If you do get new turf, Keep it well watered, If not it ends up shrinking and leaves you with a visable patch and make sure you get the grass stood the right way to your lawn, Or you will see it more obviously for a while (I found that mistake out last time I did it!)

ok so after going around every local garden shop looking for turf i had to admit defeat and head to b&q.

i got 7 rolls first, but quickly realised i'd need at least double that to cover every patch. bought another 8 friday and 5 today so 20 rolls at 3 quid but it looks so much better already.

bloody hard work though.

17 rubbish bags and 2 recycle bins full of grass

before:

during:

after:

as you can see i just have 1 small patch to do and then water it for ages. much better imo.

waste as in shit or waste as in rubble?

the grass was fine when we moved in, i caused the patches by throwing down too much grass seed i think. it's always had weeds in so tried to kill them but over done it

Keep it well watered, It has a tendancy to shrink!

I got a large bag of grass seed (About the size of a large bag of compost) for the price of a pint off a mate, Ended up throwing that down where there was no grass left!
