I finally bought in to the hype an bought myself an iPad and it's provided invaluable during business travel, watching films etc. However I have quite an extensive DVD collection that I dont intend purchasing again through iTunes and wondered if there was a one stop shop pieces of software that will allow me to back up my collection into a format that will allow me to watch it on my iPad?

if you can acquire the VLC Media Player App then you'll be sorted for pretty much any format, but it's been booted out of the App Store now

Give Handbrake a go; it converts DVD/BDs to H264(MP4/MV4), so it should work on your iPad.

sounds about right, your next headache will be getting it onto your ipad, you will need to do it via itunes, or indeed if there is enough room on the ipad to store it

I cant see why it would be a problem getting it on to my iPad, the software actually has a preset for iPad so I'm assuming that it'll be in the correct format

yes correct format, but as far as i know it not just a case of drag and drop you need to use itunes to get it on the device, also, as you cant simply plug in a usb device it will need to go on to the deivces memory which is very small for media like this

Does depend on hardware specs but it shouldn't take that long; usually i can do a DVD in under an hour. Might be worth googling (MacRumours probably has loads of threads about this) for some Handbrake iPad settings/presets. I know LifeHacker had some iPad presets that you could download.

Edit - Have a look here (post #32 might be useful) - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=886894&page=2
Also make sure you do a preview before encoding, it'll save you from encoding for X hours to find out it looks like crap.

but typical apple makes it difficult as possible to actually do what people want

Let me just go take the protective wrapper from the iPad2 sat next to me and start playing with it. Just to annoy Steve.

AVplayerHD will allow you to play any format without converting. It's been number one on the app store chart for the last few weeks and the guys on AVforums seem to rate it.

When people are saying play any format that's not really accurate.

It'll play it, at 1fps depending on file type.

As long as it plays and it's watchable
