It is ok to disconnect the power lead to the amp when the car engine is OFF or will I get a bit of a shock?

u may blow a fuse in the power cable, that's assuming u have fused it.

Got a little bit of a spark but thats it

what is the correct way to remove the power cable? ? ? engine on or off? ? ?

off i wud say.
but if there's a spark when u do it lu might have blown a fuse in the power cable, not really a big deal, just a new fuse.

not very likely you've blown a fuse. just make sure ure engine is off, and remove the earth cable first, not the live
