Looking for folk who have had some experience of the Mk4 Golf Gti 115 2.0 8v.

I know they are ment to be pretty slow/unworthy of the Gti badge etc,but ive been offered 1 as a swap for my Mk4 Astra.

Only thing that really concerns me is the mpg. What sort of mpg do they do around town??

Not really fussed about speed these days.TT99 on my licence limits me to anything quickish but that'l soon be off.

Car in question is a 2000 3door in silver.Near fsh,good bodywork 110k,18" Volk TE37's.

Shit slow, 30 mpg maybe (cant remember friend use to have 1.8t and his bro had the 2.0 8v and it was shit). General crap but reliable. Like the 1.2 8v in a corsa but in the golf gti world.

The MK4 golfs are plagued with problems afaik.

Have a search on most VW sites and even google and a whole list appear.

Aye ive asked over on SVAG but havn't got much solid info.
Few folk have told me the 2.0 8v is pretty bulletproof, but its the mpg that worries me with it being under-powered in a heavy car.

I dont think its the engine thats the problem, its the other stuff that all goes tits up. Windows not working as well as most electrics packing in, suspension components failing alot, exhaust hangers snapping etc.

Funny you say that! My friends 1.8t windows dont work, the suspension is shot and his exhaust bangs around

The golfs are just as reliable as vauxhals! every car had its niggles but easy fixes tbh.
But i must say DO NOT get either of the non turbo gti's, you will get the same mpg as the 1.8T. but without the speed! Mate had the 1.8 gti and my 1.6 corsa was quicker and done more to the gallon.

I had a 2.0 8v golf gti, went ok, looked good, drank fuel like a mother! If it was being given a boot full it returned sub 10 mpg which is terrifying!

But thats only instant mpg and you can do that in a hell of a lot of petrol cars.

and most electrical parts i.e relays etc

As people have said they are as reliable as most other cars its just they are foreseen as the more reliable than people make out as its a DUB

IMO they look very dated

Think i will just give it a miss and hold out for a Vectra C or a cash sale.
I don't want to go to something that is realistically slower than what i have, yet returns less mpg.

Cheers.

Can I not tempt you with this Nik? 2.3 V5, sounds great and returns 35mpg easily. Cruise, climate, half leather etc etc.

I'd be pretty interested in the astra if you fancy it.

Funny you say that, I had to change insurance company to get it insured.

They told me it was because I was trying to insure a hot hatch? This was when I had my Jordan insured..

Just checked back my quotes and the cheapest was just under 1400 F/C.That wasn't even my current insurer, they were further down.

I'm only paying £290 for it so not bad.. Was just a pain because I didn't even think to check before I bought it. If I had I wouldn't have bothered, lost 8 months worth of ncb.
