Currently driving a Megane Sport 2.0t, get around 34 mpg.
Soon i'm going to be doing an 80mile return commute, nearly all motorway, 4 days out of 8. So every 32 days i will be doing 16 x 80 miles=1280 miles. Don't really want to pile that sort of mileage on the megane if i can help it.
Looking for a cheap car, around 1-1.5K that I can get good MPG cruising at 75-80mph. At that speed the journey takes me 50 minutes.
Looked at a few options, mainly diesel, who claim 55mpg, but that is travelling at 60-65 mph, will prob take me and extra 15 mins at that speed.
Also been trying to calculate, how long would it take me to recoup the cost of the car, if say i get 55mpg (as opposed to 34mpg) and i'm doing 1280miles a month?
So far looked at 1.5 dci clio (very top end of budget if i want something under 100k)
306 2.0hdi hatch
Golf 1.9 tdi
Is LPG an option to look at?
Cheers

I have a 307 hdi; get on averaqe 48MPG and is a nice size car for motorways etc. But in my experience running two cars is more hassle and expense than its worth; as two lots of insurance, Tax, MOT's and an old car is prob gonna break! Would it not be worth changing the megane for something as nice but Diesel?

well theres a few reasons want another car, me and the wife need our cars daily so if either of them goes wrong it would be nice to have a spare, had to fork out for a hire car last month as was without my car for a week waiting for parts, i know its extra insurance but if it was cheap would only do tpft and if we did get a clio only 30£ a year tax. I would of thought after a bout a year getting an extra 20mpg doing 15k a year would save nearly a grand?
What car have you got VRS? Skoda?

Have thought about just px-ing this in, but i've spent a fortune on it so far, engine went and cost me 2.3k and still got several k of finance on it, so needs to last me a few years really til its paid off. So don't really want to put 30K on it over the next two years before I can get rid, would be nice to use it as a weekend toy. I can see where you are coming from though maintaining another car.

Octavia 1.8t - does 37mpg on a good run 32ish and as low as 22. But its fine had it 12 months put 30k on it and its only needed tyres and cambelt.

thought the 1.9d did less than the 2.0 hdi? what mix/speed driving was that? what are the cars like? many common problems?
In comparison i now get 350 miles to £65

mine is the 1.9d, non turbo model.
that is a bit of town driving, but id say 80% is dual carriageway driving where im in fith really quick. 5th gear at 60mph is about 2800rpm.

My 306 Dturbo is excellent on fuel. Never worked out exact mpg but it is good. Has a good bit of poke when you want to overtake and isnt just a dull drive. Mine has gti6 leather interior so makes it a bit more comfortable.

tried and get about an extra 20miles a tank. megane has 6 gears and 75-80 is 3K rpm so not exactly overworking it. if i could get something that goes like that in a diesel i would be laughing
