do you get the grant on top of the loan? someone at uni told me the grant knocks off your loan so you dont pay back as much.
i can only seem to apply for £3500 based on household income, but with no mention of the grant, it says i can have £3500 loan and may be able to have £2900 grant but then on final pages it just says im getting £3500, that wont even cover halls...

basically the finance website is shit at actually explaining anything, and no one at uni or college has been able to help so far, can anyone whos actually studying and receiving a loan tell me what i get and how etc?

cheers

The website is pretty useless aint it

Have you sent off all your p60's and that to them to show that you are entitled to the grant? Im having a bloody nightmare sorting mine out as well.

I think you will find the max you can get is around £3500. (Unless you are a student nurse/medical who get more)

I get grant given to me when I get student loans.

You only get a grant in certain circumstances. If you go through the application and they deem you fit for one, you get it.

yes it is on top of the loan, so when loan comes in (if you get max) you should get about 2K

Last year I got the loan and then a fee grant, so they paid all my fees. That was because I am over 25 and have been living independently for over 3 years though

If your parents earn under 45k, thats when you start to get some grant.

I get 4.5k, all loan

If you phone up they will reset your password and memorable data.

The grant will cancel out part of the loan, not give it you extra.

EDIT: IIRC it's around £3,500 if you live at home, more (probably £4,500 as ant mentioned) if you live away.

see its just conflicting information all the time
when i was on the site and said i wanted household income to be taken into consideration, i put less than £25k and it said i could have £3500 loan. if i put it up the £40k it said i could have a £5k loan. nothing is explained very well tbf

It depends on household income, it will reduce your loan for a bit (going down the payscale) and then start adding to it.

How would you, usually you don't get a grant unless your means tested. You don't pay the grant back, so having a smaller loan is surely beneficial? The grant usually balances out what you lose on the loan.

I'm not sure how it exactly works, I'm sure theres a calculator on the student finance website?

they are shit, I remember spending around an hour on the phone to them before.

My first year I got 3 installments of around £900 quid + the tuition fee and thats it. I lived at home though and didn't apply for extra help.

Second year I moved away and applied for extra help, got 3 installments of 900 as a grant, then another 3 installments of 1100 as a loan + the tuition fee.
