How can i go about doing a compression test to check my engine for faults, a garage recommended it today , couldnt be arsed paying for them to do it, a mates doing it for me

i payed £40 quid to have my GSi head compression tested and skimmed.
Its half for an 8v
Dunno how its done though..

get a compression tester 25-30 quid unscrew your plugs screw in tester disconnect coil lead "so it wont start" turn the car over "try the starter" for 5 secs or so then take readin of dial do all four cylindersthey shud be same compare to manual "haynes" if there close it ok if one cylinder differes a lot its fucked

or if 2 cylinders diff its the gasket between them 2
also put foot to floor on accelarator while turning over the engine

not far off i did a compression test on my panda so i guessed it was the same for all other cars
