Help me out here, looked up both but can't pick between them. I like the look of the Lumix, but don't want to be restricted should I ever want to change lenses etc as I noticed it is a fair bit smaller than other cameras.

Alpha A390

14.2MP
2.7 LCD
18-55MM

Lumix £380
12.MP
3.0 LCD
14-42mm

Originally looked at the Canon SX30 but it had a fixed lens, and the Canon EOS 1000D I looked at is pretty old now, but does have interchangable lenses.

This comparison favours the Lumix, but there are a few things on both that aren't on the other:

If you are getting something that big anyway you might as well go for an SLR imo.

EOS1000D is a good camera.

what are you planning on using it for?

if it was me i'd go for an SLR as opposed to the a four-thirds camera like the lumix, but if you were wanting some smaller, the lumix is the better option.

the 1100D is out now, so perhaps have a look at that if you were looking at the 1000d? i wouldn't rule out the sony though by any means, i had an A200 and was very pleased with it. the lens range isn't as extensive as the canon range, but with the mix of sony/zeiss/minolta lenses theres something for pretty much everybody. just something to consider

Just general use really. I don't have a camera at the moment and when ever I have needed one I have used my Dad's Nikon Coolpix.

I ruled out the Fuji Finepix a while back as they have a fixed lens. The four thirds is beginning to put me off, they would no doubt do the job but I don't want to end up with a camera that may end up with an obsolete system and restict what I can use.

I like the Lumix, but my head is saying a "proper" SLR like the Canon is more future proof. I'm by no means going to be turning in to something of an amateur photographer but would like something that I can add to in the future should I wish.

Edit - 1100D is way over what I am looking to pay. £350ish I'm looking at.

Nice one, good deal that, where's that from? Is that cashback with Nikon or through a cashback site?

Through Nikon . Need to upload receipt and warranty cards for body and lens/lenses and they send you a pre loaded Visa card. £60 if you bought 2 lenses.

Just looked on Jessops it's 399 including 40 cashback. Did you get it for 400 minus the 40 cashback then? If so, where from?

I've just had an email off Nikon saying my application has been approved and a pre paid Visa card will be posted out. Thats bloody fast service considering I only submitted the form last night!

Johnny, I paid £400 for the camera at Jessops.

Hopefully it might be cheaper in the store... http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/78032/show.html
Still a decent price online I suppose though!
