You'll need something to stop the rod from turning, if it's the correct size spanner you won't round off the nut.

you could use a deep socket of the corect size, but it will just spin the whole piston in the shock unless you hold the top with the right size spanner (8 or 7mm i think) or a pair of grips. i have a specialist socket set which holds the socket round the outside that would let the shaft pass through the middle, but it wasnt a cheap set

Isn't it just a two sided bit?
If it's hexagon then find out what size it is, and get socket that size.

there is no socket for that. its for bieng held with an open end of a spanner or vise grips
if you want to "tighten" your rear shocks, you have to turn the nut, if you turn the shaft, your doing it the hard way

Have you only got one arm?
You haven't got much room for two if you've still have seats and panels in the back.
Mole grips are your best bet to hold it still, while you do up the nut.

its better with 2 people one holding the top and another tightening as tight as they can on the nut, mole grips round the ends. and the back seats fold back in 2 secs @ corsadick

Grow up, I've done it loads of time with mole grips, and not rounded it off, on my own.
