if i'm taking a pic of an object, how do i keep the whole object in focus? e.g if i'm taking a pic of a shoe, the front of the shoe is in focus but the rear end of the shoe isn't.

yeh depth of field (DOF) but how does that work?

Small aperture and short focal length, like f18 and 24mm, will give you a deep depth of field. also focus on the middle of the shoe so your not wasting focus behind the camera.

As Adam said, the smaller the aperture (high f number) the greater the depth of field.
