Sorry to start another bike thread! I'm looking at getting a hybrid pretty soon. Will be used for rides out not commuting etc. BIL just got one too so looking to start going out regularly for fun and fitness. I hate running so this is instead of that.
Looking at this...
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_777763_langId_-1_categoryId_165534
and this
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/75-fx-disc-2011-hybrid-bike-ec026267
Got a budget of about £700 max.
Obviously will be for road use mainly but how much "off road" will these take...not much I presume....will they handle a woodland path or track?
Is it possible to put some wider offroad tyres on?
Any other bike suggestions.

I don't know much about hybrids Ben but I do know Boardman's are quite highly rated in the cycling world. The spec looks quite good.
Have you considered looking at the specialized sirrus models?

Yeah...had a mooch at the Specialized Sirrus. Nice bike. Not as nice looking as the Boardman or the Trek tho imo.
My only concern about the Boardman is you can only get them in Halfords pre built. Don't trust the Halfords spanner monkeys.
Suppose I could just get it checked out at a decent cycle shop.

I'll be getting the boardman comp road through the cycle scheme. The quality and spec of the board man bikes is cracking. Only thing to keep in mind is the boardman hybrids come with hydraulic disc breaks. Means changing the brake fluid every now and then instead of just having cable.

I have an older version of this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=57194
Great bike with the advantage of front sus so bit more scope for rougher ground. Has a lockout so can remain rigid for road riding

Something like Simon posted is going to be better if you want to do woodland paths and tracks.

They all have lockout for the suspension so when you are on road it will be more like a rigid bike. Then unlock when you go off road for the suspension to work fully.

Was thinking as i'm mainly doing roads, i'd rather avoid extra weight and maintenance of suspension.

In my view it all depends how far and fast you wanna get there i use my Downhill Saracen to get to work on and it does the commute fine, i just use the fork lockout to hard and it rides great on roads.

Potentially the plan is if I enjoy the road cycling enough i'll get a full road bike to replace the hybrid.

a cheapy mountain bike I've had since I was a kid.

A specialized allez 2011 road bike
My Planet X track bike
Still considering getting another bike through the cycle to work scheme, probably a nice MTB

Been talking about getting a bike on cycle to work scheme for ages, I like this Trek:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/6000-2011-mountain-bike-ec023915
I think this Scott may be better though, thoughts?
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/aspect-20-2011-mountain-bike-ec025395
P.S. I've completely forgotten about how the scheme works, what would I be paying back on a bike for £650?

They're much of a muchness Tom but the chainset, derailleurs and hubs are better on the Trek.
