Tempted to buy a cheap set of alloys but one will need repairing as it has a hairline crack in. Anyone had a wheel repaired before. Can get it done cheap enough I just dont want to end up dead with it been a wheel and all that

said crack

I have never had a crack in the spoke repaired before. Not sure I'd want to either

A friend (works with a GT CUP race team) is always saying its a no-go as the weld is to stiff and it causes them to shatter. Im yet to see it though.....

Also the weld on the front would have to be ground down or it would look poop and therefore take 50% of the strength out of the weld.

Big in the VW world, Normally the issue is finding the end of the crack so it don't continue cracking.

If you can find somebody who is willing to do it and knows what they are doing, be ok IMO.

Nothing wrong with it if it's done properly. Take it to a proper company and not some monkey back street garage and they'll probably even guarantee their work. My comp has to be welded when they got refurbed, if it was unsafe then they simply wouldn't do it.

How the hell did you manage to damage a Comp to the extent that it needed welded??Those wheels are strong muthafukas.

Unless they stress test or analyse the repair, neither company can guarantee it won't fail.

They may promise you a new wheel, but that is little consolation after it's failed and thrown you in a hedge.

A hairline crack could go through the whole spoke. The weld wont. I wouldn't be keen on it.

Had the tyre bit welded before and it was fine, wouldnt risk it with a spoke though.

But they wouldn't do it if it was deemed unsafe? I'm not saying they'll definetly do it on a spoke, as mine nor is most welding done on a spoke as it's more likely to be if somebody takes a chunk out of a wheel on the edge. But I'm saying it's possible to be repaired.

Always, no! NEVER repair cracks in alloys wheels!

You can have small nicks filled and repaired but cracks affect the structual integritty, any problems and the wheel shatters, guess when. When driving it.......not good.

I was thinking about this, I can totally understand the extra stresses of high speed cornering etc on track, but on the road a pothole could cause the a wheel crack to open up, and then maybe send you off into the hedge.

Swings and roundabouts.
