Been thinking about one for a while and after my recent holiday im wanting to get a proper camera and move away from digital cameras.

Looking for reccomendations for a camera thats beginner friendly and reccomendations for where to buy, high street shops such as currys or better online? Never had any experience with DSLR's or lenses before, havent really got a budget but not paying great amounts. Say maybe a £500 budget? Obviously not wanting to blow the whole lot if I dont have to

Go to a shop like Jessops and have a good look round Canons and Nikons in your price range, see which you like best. I bought my last body off ebay, cheap cheap.

In fairness, any of the entry level DSLRs are gonna do what you need!

You'll be looking for Auto-focus lenses, which I think all the Canons do, and i'd imagine Nikon have bought in on their entry level cameras now.

MPs aren't really an issue nowadays as they're pretty much all above 10 anyway.

Just have a feel of a couple in your price range and see which feels best in your hands, as I said, they're all pretty much comparable to eachother nowadays so doesn't matter too much which brand you're after.

Usual suggestion on here is to buy a body fairly cheap and spend any extra on some good lenses.

Also, http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk is a good price comparison website, which should help

Having a look on currys website just now as a starting point

Whats the main differences between the canon EOS1000D and EOS1100D?

Canon EOS 1000D £330

Canon EOS 1100D £400

For £70 extra it looks like your getting the newer model is it?

This.

I read online reviews from half a dozen differant websites and narrowed my choice down to a Nikon, Canon and Sony.

The Nikon had the best spec, the Sony looked the best and the Canon was a Canon!

After looking at all 3 the Nikon won hands down. So definately draw up a short list online then go in store and check them out.

Talking to a relative who does a bit of photography and been reccomended to go Canon, and to go for the 1000D and with the cash saved against the 1100D I can put it towards a lense.

Im in Aberdeen tomorrow for work so will try and get into Jessops in the town, if no will try and get to my local currys for a look / feel as you say

I dismissed the 1000D due to the fact it is quite old now and the 1100 has a fixed lens,

What do you mean by fixed lens and is this an advantage or disadvantage?

It doesn't have a fixed lens, uses the same lens system as all the other Canon dslr's.

Im hoping to use this as a starting point, and hopefully as I pick it up as I go along I can then practice better techniques and effects etc so would like to change lenses. Thats why I thought of going for the 1000D and some cash towards a lense. Dont want to spend too much either incase it turns into a paperweight which im sure it wont

My mrs bought a canon eos 1000d and its simple to use however she broke auto focus so now have to use manual focus! It came with a 18mm-55m lens which is great for close snaps however not brilliant for further distance shots! So i would recommend them as they are simple and fantastic cameras but im currently looking for a bigger lens for further shots

Bestbuy (and I assume most other electronic warehouses) are having a sale over the bank holiday weekend, could be worth seeing what you can pick up from them.

Its not going to be used for anything major, and iv only ever just used basic digital cameras in the past so would be a decent step up and starting point would it not?

yes. try and get a bundle deal for your budget that includes a longer lens as well as the 17-55, like a 55-200 or 70-300 etc.

My mate has a 1000D which I've been borrowing recently and is more than adequate for what I want an SLR for.

But yes the 1100D is the later version - you can change the lens on it as another mate has just bought it and another lens for it too. That's probably the one I will opt for soon.

Cant wait to start familiarising myself with it and getting to grips with it
