All,

You may or may not know, but I currently own a Mk4 Golf GTi Turbo, of which I am selling. Based on events today, it looks like it will be sold, so the hunt for a new car begins.

With an impending wedding, my criteria for a new vehicle has changed someone, I care more about tax bands and mpg, than ever before.

I do not do anywhere near the amount of miles that I used to, and mainly use the car for communting to work (7 Miles each way)

I will be making a "bigish" car purchase after the wedding next year, but need something to tide me over in the meantime.

The other half has a Toyoya Aygo, and I have to say (and I know its the same platform as the C1) its a cracking little car, sips fuel, and generally goes quite well for a 1.0 car.

My criteria is as such.
-Something handy on the tax band side of things.
-Good mpg (Probably diesel I am thinking)
-Bigger than an Aygo size vehicle if possible, as its handy for us for us to have a slightly bigger car, for the bigger shopping trips!
-Something I can fit my mountain bike in (hopefully) If not Ill buy a rack!
-Not something falling apart (obviously)
-Something to get in and drive, and not worry about
-Not French (no offence, I just do not like French cars)
-Something not totally rediculous (i.e Chevy Spark or something horrid within this bracket!)
-Something that can hopefully overtake a rice pudding.

The only sticking point really is the budget - I am going to be looking at the £1500-£2000 bracket, difficult I know.

The only car that I can really think of, that fits most of the above, would be a mk5 pre-2001 Polo TDi, but I am struggling with my budget really.

I know that with my crtieria etc, that its a tough one, and I might sound picky for a "runabout" but that likelyhood is, if that I am likely to be stuck with it for longer than planned, that it will last and do the job.

If anyone has any sensible suggestions, then please help!

Many thanks.

I was going to say Fabia VRs, then i seen your budget, hmm, could possibly get a Bora TDi? Golf TDi?

Depends where you buy one from, mate of mine has just taken a Bora TDi 150 in p/x at his work, £1500, 106k. Get to the auctions and see what prices things are doing.

Got a friend keeping an eye at his auction house at the moment.

Not really favouring the Bora to be honest, as they are 1.9, the tax might be in the right region, but I feel I could do better on the insurance.

I know what your saying, Bora's aint very nice. If you could push your budget a tad more, and try get a Corsa C 1.3 CDTi, the cheap £35 tax per year one. Although you would have to get a bike rack i think.

Very true, however, I have driven one recently, and I could not get over how poor it was (it might be the particular car as opposed to them in general)

But I am 6'2", and even with the seat the whole way back I struggled to drive the dam thing!

Loving that!
3cm - Yep Vag man, however, I am willing to look at other things, for my price bracket it all seems to be Meganes, Clio's and 206's, and Ill be totally honest, I don't trust the basic of the basic models, althought if I want things like A/C and things like seat belts, you are right, I may need to consider it, but it makes crawl, I have to say.

Also, I managed to loose the pictures of the GSi somewhere

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Anyone any other thoughts?

Would love to hit the lower tax brackets, and to be honest, im prepared to forget the bike space, ill just buy a rack.

Small car, good mpg, petrol or diesel for under £2k?

You must be a freak of a frame then. Im 6 5" with long legs and I easily fit in my c and have the seat about 60% back on the runners.
