What are the rules on this? ive been told many times by many diffrent people its illigal to drive with your interior light on at night.
i can see this making sense due to not alowing any white light to be seen at the rear of the vehicle, but then does the same rule not apply to buses? and if i were to drive a pannel van, would i be able to drive with the light on?
cant find any official statements on it

Why would you want to do it in the first place?
I've been pulled for it before, apparently police believe it's a sign of a drink driver as well.

Nothing worse than a bright interior light at night, I fucking hate it when someone puts it on when you're driving.

i've also been told it's illegal to drive with interior light on.
but then you see police interceptors and they have their lights on inside the car so it's confusing.

I thought it was becase the light reflects on the window, like if you look outside of your house windows at night the windows reflect the inside but if you turn the lights off you can see outside fine.
Busses have no lights in the cabin bit where the driver sits so he can see out but have lights where the passengers sit

I liked it in my audi because there was a central main light then each person had their own directed reading light, plus the lights when you open the mirror on the sunvisors. Anyway, I had heard similar about using interior lights whilst driving.

Illegal or not its distracting and affects your view from the mirror.

It doesn't distract me if I only have mine on for a short time but I admit I've been distracted by other drivers with it on.
I have found myself watching dvds in other peoples cars when I've been along side on the motorway aswell

Dont buses usually have the interior lights dipped at night too?
Cant see any need for having it on really unless for a short length of time, or theres always phones now too which give off alot of light if your mrs really has to find something in her bag

I have all my dash lights etc turned to their lowest all the time, the dash lights distract me so an interior light would drive me mad!

I don't know if there's an official rule tbh or not - I wouldn't want it on anyway!
You scared of the dark?!
Agreed on having dash lights turned down as much as possible too. Saab have the right idea with a 'night panel' button - shuts everything down apart from the speedo.
