Telegraph motoring article
quote: Land Rover has announced that it will replace the Defender in 2015, 67 years after the venerable four-wheel drive vehicle first went on sale.
To coincide with the announcement, the company has released images of a new concept called the DC100, which will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 13 and is intended to kick start the design process for the new Defender.

What ever replaces it is going to have to be rugged enough for farmers to still want to buy it. They must make up a large portion of Defender owners at the moment?

I just can't imagine that towing a cattle trailer down a narrow country lane getting the shit scratched out of the paint by the hedges. And chunks out of those fancy wheels from rocks.

i can see the body kind of working, but the wheels will need to be far more basic which will just look wrong against the rest of it
they should just remake the current following a very similar design just modernise all the workings

The only thing that pisses me off with the current one is the seat adjustment or more the lack of! They are so cramped. After half an hour driving the one at the farm my back is crippled

I bet the replacement will have buttons instead of a gearstick to put it in high and low

The current one, although functional, is so damn agricultural.
Just because its a working car, doesn't mean it can't be civilized and have lots of creature comforts.
I think its spot on and will be a hit

You'd be gutted if you scratched or dented the one above though! Looks too fancy.
With the current one its not a proper Defender till its had a dent in it

Reason for doing away with the Defender is....
"Total replacement will be needed by 2015, when new regulations regarding crash safety for pedestrians will render the current design obsolete"
Plus it doesn't meet US regulations so can't be sold over there without extensive and expensive modifications

Will you still have to drive it with your elbow sticking out the window though?

H&S ruining everything as per usual!!
It'll be a hell of a long time till we see the actual end of the defender.
You can buy defender chassis new, so someone will start building them as a kit car, pretty sure the same H&S bullshit dnt apply to them.

It's about time. 67yrs is a fairly decent lifespan for one model
Times change, things move on. Will probably need a farmer spec one in green with shit wheels

Land Rover confirmed a few years ago that it was working on an all new Defender due for release in 2012 so it seems it's been put back a bit. These pedestrian safety rules make no sense either, what if you get hit by a bus or HGV?
Also the reason it isn't sold in USA is lack of airbags.
If it wasn't for the new regs I'm pretty sure Land Rover would just have added a few more luxuries(heaters that blow warm air would be nice) and fitted newer engines.
I hope they don't screw it up, the farmers will go mental if it's some plastic tarts mobile.
