My other half is wanting to get a new Skoda Fabia vRS, we were at the Skoda garage yesterday and the salesman said there's a 5 month waiting list for them at the moment (and that there are apparently no vRSs in stock anywhere) so we are looking at alternatives as she doesn't want to wait so long.

Apart from getting a nearly new one and saving about £2k, what other similar sized cars could she look into?

She's not too bothered about monster engine performance but at the same time it can't be a 1.2 (an exception may be the Fabia 1.2 turbo?), it has to be a similar size to the Fabia and it has to be an automatic.

We also looked at the Fiat 500 twinport but that was just too small, and a Suzuki Swift 1.5 16v yesterday and although she likes it I can't help but think that will have mega depreciation.

I did suggest maybe a Corsa, she said no...

BTW - she can drive a manual etc. but she said she prefers automatics - I suspect this may be caused by me letting her drive my old V6 Calibra ages ago, which was an auto...

Polo GTI and Seat Ibiza have the same engine and gearbox but may have the same waiting time?

Personally I would buy a nearly new, ex demo or look out for a cancelled order if you don't want to wait that long! There are about 20 on Autotrader with less than 5,000 miles, one of those must fit the bill?

Oh yeah forgot about the Ibiza, I assume build quality in general is the same on all of those seeing as they are all VAG cars?

Not sure about the latest models but in previous models I've always found the Seats to have cheaper plastics for the dash etc. and the Skodas to feel more solid.

I did think the (new) Fabia felt quite solid when we sat inside the vRS (and some other mid range model) at the dealer's yesterday.

Does anyone have any experience with the Suzuki Swifts BTW? i.e. are they OK or shit?

No experience of them but I'd have the VAG's over it, resale value will be higher with the vRS also.

Yeah I did say to my other half that my first choice would be a Fabia (vRS or otherwise) from the current range.

The Swift I thought reminded me a lot of the Micra she used to have.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Fabia is much better made than the Ibiza Skoda interiors are really quite impressive and without spending more you'll probably struggle to find better.

Personally I'd just keep an eye at local skoda dealerships for a demo fabia or something 6 months old.

Yes, all OTR prices are direct from their price lists. Obviously you can barter down but you can also barter down in skoda garage.
