Battery died on my phone and so far plugging it in to the charger has not done anything. I know the charger works as it turned my iPod on.
I've tried pressing and holding power, power and home button and a couple of other things.
Any ideas?

iphone 3gs could develop an issue where the charging cradle would come loose inside on the phone and not connect properly. Dont know greatd etails but perhaps same issue here.
Is there any notification that the phone is reacting to the charger, tried another charger? tried charging from PC to see if it recognises the device?

My brother just called round and got it working 
He did the butting in whilst not plugged in.

Power+ home button whilst not plugged in im guessing. That was going to be my suggestion

so the battery wasnt dead then just needed resetting
