The 1st time i ever failed an mot was this time last year, its just failed this year on:

-Exhaust, both boxes blowing and not supported (hangers missing)
-Wishbone & Ball joint (passenger side) from when i hit the kerb and bent the wheels
-Drivers wheel bearing
-tyre has a deep cut

Going to fix it myself again, should be good for another year

You put a car in for a MOT with a blowing exhaust, the others i could almost undertsand as they are not always visable or make a sound but the exhaust, come on

Maybe he put it in to see what else it would fail on. No point spending £200 on new exhaust boxes and fitting then have an MOT and find out its going to cost another £500 to go through the MOT. It would be cheaper to buy a new one.

Exactly, I always put cars through MOTs even if I know its going to fail (unless its something daft like a bulb) retests are free and if it fails on major rot or something I can be happy knowing I haven't spent money fixing other things just to get rid of it

i seriously believe its a better option then having one semi-new semi-decent car that i don't really feel much love for.

Is alot to be said for being able to not give two shits about a car and fixing it as cheap as possible.

I still get around plenty quick enough with it being a 1.8, you only need to do 80-90mph these days

fitted the lower arm/ball joint on saturday, was easy, only 3 bolts, so thats both side now got new lower arms

new tyre on that side also, like it so much am going to go and order another so i have a matching pair of tyres on the front groundbreaking stuff, got 4 different makes and states of wear atm.

exhaust just arrived, looks like new, pleased with that.

can't be arsed fitting it or the bearing so going to book it in garage for them to do, figured i hardly spent anything on cars in the last year compared to normal so don't mind paying out.

Have you ever had to put sawdust in the engine?? Quite a common service requirement on old Fords.

i would put some sawdust on them asap Steve.

might snap due to hydrogen embrittlement, probably introduced at the plating/phosphating stages.
