I use a computer at work for the majority of the day, and im starting to get headaches. i dont currently wear glasses but my close up vision isnt what it used to be so im thinking im getting a bit long sighted.

Is there any duty of care that a company have to pay for an eye test and if needed pay for glasses as i dont really have any use for them at home as i dont watch much telly or use the computer there.

i will pay for them if i have to but life is always nicer if i can spend my company's money, i can spend the rest of mine on beer and new tools

Yeah a company should be paying for an eye test if you work on a computer, or at least contributing to it.

If you dont currently wear glassess they have to give a % towards the cost. Some places have free eye test's others you get a voucher or do expenses for the cost

Never been staff to know really, but even as a contractor at BNFL they paid £125 toward your glasses and paid for the tests.

They should be doing a risk assessment test on you anyway. Could be glare that's causing the headaches.

An employer does I believe have to pay for an eye test if you work with a VDU/DSE on a regular basis, but they do not have to pay for your glasses.

Risk Assessments and Workstation Assessments should be undertaken.

some are free, i pay 10 quid for mine in costco iirc.

oh and you should have also reported the issue with your eyes to your shop steward (if you have one) or the welfare department at your work.

in my case, i would have to claim through the company using my union.

Computers hurt your eyes if you use them for lOng periods of time. You chose to work at a computer. Own fault tbh.

Not as far as I have been told. I had to pay for mine, only got the test paid for.

Gary, if you worked for a company where you did a job that involved a lot of driving, would you pay for your own petrol if there was an opportunity for your company to cover this outgoing for you?

I'm not saying my company is obliged to pay for them as I'm happy to pay for them myself, but if I could save myself a few quid I will try. My job doesn't pay an amazing amount but it is a regular income and the hours are good which gives me plenty of time to see my missis and kids.

Why pay for something yourself if it could be free or cheaper?
