Anyone know much about these?

What to look out, what things need changing at certain mileage etc?

And what sort of mpg do they do standard driven gently?

Look cool as fuck mate. Not too slow standard i seem to remember mine not being too far off your redtop with a snapped downpipe bolt.

Look out for sensors ect as theyre the worst thing on the 1.8ts

I loved mine but mk4 golf gtis are the better car imo

Worst is probably the usual coil pack problems with the 1.8 20V T
Least if it does break down then you'll know what it is

Engine sensors is the main thing, MAF, coils, cam/crank sensors, etc. Window regulators are common to fail. Theres nothing major as such that goes wrong. Check for rust on the arches too and around the f&r screens.

Too many sensors imo. Mine was a pig.

Just make sure camblet has been done at 60k and the water pump has been changed to one with a metal impelor as the plastic ones crumble.

Mediocre handling, 20mm rear spacers and decent suspension helps, but still not in CTR/182 territory.

Remap totaly transforms them.

I've had 2. Both remaped with exhaust downpipes etc. Had my 2nd 1 dynoed at 220bhp. Go really really well. Never had a problem with either of mine. Very underestimated

nice car but mine had a lot of bother with sensors going all the time, All coilpacks needed done (£30 each last time I bought them) both O2 sensors at £120 a time, rear boot handle also went as did the rear wash but its a DIY fix just a bit fiddley. Handling aint superb and thats with the full H&R Cup suspension and upper brace I had on but its enough for road use I suppose. A remap transforms them performance wise.

Mechanically mine was sound.

Was running an ottinger ECU, CAI and exhaust so probably in low 200's bhp wise but the standard K03 does run out of steam quite early on. Fit an K03S as found in the Octavia VRS and later Golf GTi's iirc and its a totally different car.

Agree with the comment about the handling being 'Mediocre'. Worse handling "hot hatch" I have had by a clear Mile. I also fitted the official Seat Sport suspension kit didn't make much difference but i never experimented with spaces or ARB's.

Mine was ONVI yellow and back in 2004 used to turn a lot of heads. I think they are starting to have a cool retro look to them now.

Oh and remap it and the standard brakes are not up to the job. You need Brembo's from the Cupra R. I think Badger 5 sells a kit.

They aren't that bad, get some decent pads and discs and you will stop quick enough.

Well I had ATE power discs (not the best but probably better then stock) and more importantly ferrodo DS2500's and they were still shockingly shit and not fit for purpose on a 200bhp + car.

Bear in mind this was just spirited driving on the road so forget track and if you are really pushing on.

I had moments with both handling and braking that eventually contributed my move to my first Scooby.

You seem to be comparing a luke warm hatch to a scooby?

I see where you are coming from.

Overall I enjoyed my Cupra but the following made me want to look elsewhere

1) Mediocre handling, even with the SEAT Sport suspension kit i invested in. (Had previously had 2 106 rallye's so pretty much knew what a good FWD handling hatch could be like)

2) Shocking brakes, felt no better then my 1.3 encore fiesta and as stated above it was running good pads.

3) Torque Steer (to be expected in a car of this type), unable to get power down in anything other then dry conditions and perfect road.

Test drove an STi version 4 which addressed all the above. Granted I am comparing a hot hatch (Was hot hatch standards back in 2000, so im not going to refer to it as luke warm) to a road going rally car.

I guess it did not deliver what I expected off it, it still had a lot of plus points. I had a similar experience with my leon cupra although generally it was a lot better in most areas.

Conclusion

I would reccomend one but would strongly suggest, Brembos, coilovers, rear ARB and remap if you are looking for a "hot hatch" experience.

Dont you have a GTI not a cupra?

My brakes on my cupra werent great but wernt the worst in the world.

Really good car for a daily etc just found the thing so boring to drive. seem to be coming down in price a fair bit though which is a plus
