i think its something to do with if the car is fitted with the sat nav system.
i remeber pushing one into the dash when vauxhall gave me a corsa for a loan car.

As said, it's a sunlight sensor for climate control, or a blank piece of plastic if you don't have it. I've got the same thing in my Punto.

My Astra VXR had one, but other Astra VXR's Didn't. I wondered what it was, mine had the Digital Climate Control Upgrade, so the Climate control theory sounds good.
