Im hoping to pick the best of corsasports brains...
Basically i earn £12000 after tax and want to move out on my own into a 1 bed flat which would be on average £450 a month in my area. I have no real idea of the average costs and needs someone whos experienced to let me know what im getting into.
Can anyone give me an idea of the average outgoings if i spend £120 roughly a month on car costs.

You need to earn a shedload more mate, I spend £1k a month on a 1 bed place, and the only difference is my mortgage is £525
|

You will need to pay for the following:
- council tax (check the bands on your council website for likely costs, and don't forget you can get a 25% discount I think it is if you're the only occupant of your property)
- gas
- electric
- water
- tv licence
- phone line and broadband (optional)
- contents insurance (optional)
Some places might be electric only.
Utility bills are all variable as it depends what supplier you use, how much you use etc. etc.
To give you an example, on a 3 bed house we pay £109/month for gas and electric, and £40/month water.
I personally think you will struggle if all you get is £1k/month after tax.
I would suggest getting a 2 bedroom place and getting a flatmate to split the bills.

I'd look at either sharing a 2 bed place with someone or a house share, you'll seriously struggle otherwise.

most people spend the same on outgoings as their mortgage each month iirc. so if your mortgage is 500 a month, you'll need 1k to cover all costs, including food and petrol and stuff.

I live on my own and my outgoings are about £800 for rent, bills and council tax.

Rent - 475
Gas + Elec - 80
Water - 20
TV robbery - 15
Council robbery - 120
Thats all i pay to my actual house. The rest of outgoings are about £200 for loans and phone etc. I struggle on £1300 a month. With your wages it'll be tight. Why not ask a friend if they want to house share? That works well

So you have £880 after the 120 car costs (I assume that includes fuel, insurance and tax  )
Rent - £450
Council Tax - £70 (Top end estimate after discount)
Gas and Electric - £70 (Will vary massively as I dont know how much you will be there or how careful you are with leaving tele on etc
Water - £20
TV Licence - £12.50
Thats £622 which leaves you with around £250 for food, going out, savings, maintenance, mobile phone...

Thanks for all your thoughts/experiences, I am pretty much certain now I won't be leaving home within the next 6 months, so between now and then I'm aiming to get a new job, a more economical car and save as much as I can. What would I do without the good people of corsasport!

If your single stay with your parents.
I personally think your need 2 good wages coming thses days to have your own place.

Depends where you live though. I couldnt live comfortably where i live on 30k a year. If you mean 30k after tax then yes, i'd agree with that.

I think that would be for everywhere really as a rough mark. Could live on less anywhere tbh, 700 or 800 mortgage, still leave you with about 1500 for other bills. Which is quite nice

You have it easy up there. Me and my mum were looking at houses in inverness(sp) a while ago. There was nice big houses for £400,000. The equilant down here would be 2-3 times that price.
