Refurbing one of the many PCs I've got here at the moment, this particular one comes up with a POST message "HDD S.M.A.R.T. command failed, press F1 to continue" or something along those lines.
Done a low level format on it and it didn't come up with any errors.
I'm assuming the HDD is dying? It's an old Maxtor drive BTW.

Check in the BIOS for an option to turn off SMART drive feature. That may work.
Either way its very possible that the drive is on its way out anyways.
How old is drive?

It's pretty ancient TBH. Probably 5-8 years old?
