Better of manual clutches are easy to fit 2 hour job also exhaust cracked in middle where silencers are and do it all the time backing plate on rear brakes corrode and spring retaining blip that holds shoes goes and causes rear brake problems off u do decide to go for one make sure uve got service history as a monkey can reset service light with a paper clip and these engines need serviced regularly

Damo when I was looking at them I found thisnthread quite useful
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=72&h=&t=258875
If turbos go, hybrids are usually cheaper than original ones
Usual e46 problems:
Rear springs snapping
Leaky water pumps
Check consumption if it is really poor (like sub 20) it's usually a thermostat problem
Also with higher miles the m sport suspension gets tired and will feel very firm!
Check for a loose jiggly rear end will mean trailing arm bushes
Unstable feel/juddering under braking highlights track control arms
History can vary between oil services (self explanatory) inspection 1 and inspection 2. Check the history and make sure an inspection 2 isn't due any time soon, although e46's are not bad on servicing cost.
I will say 5/5 330d's I looked at had all of the problems above which pissed me off. So many of them out there now have moon miles and have been owned by people wanting cheap motoring just because it is a diesel!

A 53 plate will deffo be a 204 bhp, for reassurance go to your local bmw dealer and ask for them to print you off the original order/spec sheet so you can clarify.
Oh yes swirl flaps too get them blanked at they are common to go and often take the engine with them!!!

Check the engine code should be an N57 make sure the codes on the vin plate and suspension turret match the log book
