as some of you who have seen my thread may know, i want to do some work on my car over the winter. besides it wouldnt be any good in the snow anyway. went out today and bought this 1.4 8v 5 door just as a run around for the winter.

the idea is , i can chuck all my wheels in at the same time to get refurbed, make trips to the breakers etc... without worrying about potholes, or caring to much for the car.
so here it is:
nothing special , no air con or power steering etc.. but that will be fine for a few months.
70,000 miles
new fuel tank
new back box and middle box.
paints fucked, but should buff back up.
the car is completely solid underneath , no rust at all.
the only problem with it is the fan belt is loose and half the teeth are missing, which isnt a major problem and i tackled that today. got it for £300 in the end which is a result!
tried replacing the fan belt today, undone the two nut at the top, but the one just below the pulley is now as round as a 10p piece. just wouldnt budge either way and is now fucked. couldnt get it to move with mulgrips either.
do i have to undo every bold that holds on the alternator to loosen the slack on it? in the end i cut the old belt off in fustration lol
heres the arden up against the new 5 door.
no plans for it at all, gonna keep it standard till next year and hopefully sell it on for a profit!

A project thread for a car that you have no plans for? Not much of a project then
I'd love to buff that up though, its amazing when you see the transformation from a faded red car when you get it shining

My god that engine bay's a mess should hold you out the winter though and give you time to get the other ones plans sorted

i cant leave the bay looking like that haha, will have to sort the gaskets etc..

Convert it to MPI. Should be a bit more lively and not as sore on fuel.

haven't a clue! i only noticed it when i got home, looks like someone drilled a whole through the roof and put mastic around it. dont even know if it works

Looks like a X14SZ if I'm not mistaken? Good bullet proof engines those.
But are you not slightly worried by the state of the engine bay? That would suggest to me it hasn't been well looked after at all, look at the header bottle!

not in the slightest bit worried mate, its the rocker cover gasket that's caused the oil leak. that header tank bottle is terrible though. will have to get that cleaned up. runs perfectly from startup, so im happy with it for what i paid.
got the new fan belt fitted today, nice to hear no squeaking now!

TBH I'd be well happy with that bay, Makes it easy to see the seller isnt trying to hide anything, can find any oil leaks
Give it a jet wash and it would look 10 times better. That rocker cover, don't squish the cork gasket too much.

spend today sorting out the engine bay, decreasing it and replacing the rocket cover gasket.
put all that back together and started a bit of detailing and getting the paint back red again. you all know how bad it is!
only managed to get one side done but the paint really goes look amazing.

Last week when I was picking up a new engine for the arden, the rear wheel bearing went. Still had to drive back 90 miles with the engine in the back. By the time I got home the wheel Bearing had welded itself to the stub axle and drum. Got the split pin and the nut off yesterday and some of the bearings fell out. Took all day ,a blow torch and an angle grinder to remove the wheel bearing. What a nightmare!
Look at the state of the bearing now!
Got the new one on in the end and all is good now

just normal engine decreaser and a brush. then high pressure water over the area takes it right off. took the rocker cover off and done the same. used carb cleaner for the carb thats about it really.
