Ive always been brought up with the word 'crap' being a swear word. But since asking a few people they think it's not? And my misses thinks it was ok to say in front of my 5 year old daughter, before correcting her.
So, is it?

Its a polite way of saying 'shit' but even so I've said it in front of my grandparents who are very old fashioned and strict and I've never been belted yet.

crap isn't a swear word, it's just a word that originated from the word crapper.
thomas crapper invented the toilet.
wouldn't say it around 5 year olds though, same as bugger, bloody etc.

Depends, stupid people and American's (same thing) may consider it swearing. But over there they cut a lot more out don't they. I would say crap is okay around a kid...
Maybe just don't overdo it I hardly ever swear around my mum, but wouldn't think twice about saying crap lol.

Agree with Ben G, I wasn't allowed to say crap until I was of the age where I could get away with bugger and such. Just remember it's not only in the house she'll say it as well, do you really want your 5yr old girl running about saying that word? Personally I wouldn't

Its not a swear word at all imho. I remember a girl I dated years ago, her mum thought it was a swear word and I kept saying it, trying to be polite and not using bad language Back fired abit But anyways, I can't understand how anyone could think it was a swear word.

Thomas Crapper didn't invent the toilet. He did the the first flushing toilet. Sir John Harrington invented the first toilet

I've actually lost a job for swearing before but I'll agree that crap isn't up there with the watershed words. call me old fashioned but I just don't think it's a nice thing to see a little girl in the street talking like that

Crap isn't a swear word as such but more of a slang word, like "bugger" and "crud" (if you're American).
I probably wouldn't say it around my 5 year old (if I had one) TBH, but then in some ways I'm old fashioned.
As someone said a few posts above though, it's just a polite way of saying "shit".

Thomas Crapper didn't invent the toilet. He did the the first flushing toilet. Sir John Harrington invented the first toilet
apologies, i meant the first modern world toilet, e.g. flushing and not just a hole in the ground

He didn't invent the flushing toilet, although he did found a company that made them. Crap doesn't come from the Crapper name either, think it's just coincidence.
I don't consider crap swearing either though.

Oh right. Interesting reading peoples opnions. There are many words I wouldn't want my daughter saying that are far from swearing - retard, muppet etc. I just see it as it doesn't look very good on me if she is running around school saying these words. Like I say, I have been brought up with crap being a swear word, so for that reason I'll always see it as a swear word

I agree with retard but I think muppet is fine, especially considering the tv show.
Whilst I don't consider crap swearing I don't think I'd want my son saying it, he said bloody the other day and got told not to anymore.

Depends what context u use muppet in though, if u were u talking about the show then obviously it's fine, but if she were to call someone a muppet then that is wrong.

With the words u consider aren't swearing John, if u were to call someone a cock or a pussy, then that's swearing, surely?

The classification of the word is unimportant.
The only point to consider is you will look like a chavvy cunt if your 5year old is calling stuff crap in Asda.
