I gave blood yesterday and decided to sign up as a bone marrow donor
Does anyone on here have any experience in this that they could share?
And if you're going to try and put me off... don't bother, I've heard it all before

I thought bone marrow donations left you out of action for a while?

I'm on the register as well, but never been named as a match for anyone.
Supposedly its actually quite rare to be found as a match.

No thank you, I have seen and heard the horror stories.
Kudos to those that are right enough. Very selfless.

I'm on the register. The most common way like giving blood.
How is it done

Step-mum donated just last week.
Had to have several injections over the course of a week to force the stem cells into her blood. Sat in a chair for 5 hours whilst they constantly drained and replaced blood (pulling stem cells out in between). Couldn't move her right arm at all throughout the process (and because she didn't want to have to go to the toilet never had anything to drink either).
Didn't hurt, just long and boring.

There's numerous complications. It can also be brutally painful.

Isn't that how you donate platelets?
Bone marrow comes from inside the bone.

I'm the other way round, on the list to find a match to receive it

Yes platelets don't require a weeks worth of injections. The injections draw the stem cells out of the bone marrow. They don't stick fuck off big needles into your hip anymore or any others scary shit like that.
It's not hard to look up on the blood donor website. They know what they're on about on there and everything....

Ah well. I was under the impression they still used big fuck off needles and jammed them into your hip.
And I still signed up. I'm a proper trooper

Its a shame bone marrow isn't like blood. I've got universal blood (o-).
I'd have given you some of my bone marrow.

Shit dude
What's the reason you need it?
Good to see that there's a few on here that are on the register.
I hadn't realised that you might never get called up to donate. I actually hope I do get called up. Give me that nice warm fuzzy feeling inside that I've done something good for someone.

Copy Pasta
What is CGD (Chronic Granulomatous Disorder)?
CGD is a rare and life-threatening genetic condition which could affect 8-10 people in a million of us. You are born with a faulty gene in your bone marrow, meaning your white blood cells cannot fight infections as they should. People with CGD have to take powerful antiobiotics and antifungals every day. But thanks to gifts from people like you, our understanding of CGD has hugely improved in recent years. Treatments including bone marrow transplants are increasingly successful. Although still in its infancy gene therapy offers real hope for the future with promising results from recent clinical trials

Sorry to hear that Whittie
Have you found a match yet? What sort of success rate do they have in finding someone?
I always thought bone marrow was like blood and that there were only a handfull of "types"

Nah, been on it about six years or something. Brother wasn't a match either.
It's very rare to even find a match, doesn't bother me day to day anyway, my hygiene is just better than most peoples
Once a match is found i'd have to wait for November time to have it done, 6 months recovery period in isolation, so when recovery is over it's not cold and nobody has flu etc.
