Can some-one enlighten me as to the purpose of touching the shoulders with
the sword during the Knighthood ceremony, I have heard and read several differing
opinions.

Off the top of my head I'd say because that's what they did when they appointed someone a knight back the olden days, could be completely wrong though...

"The squire knelt in front of the lord, who tapped the squire lightly on each shoulder with his sword and proclaimed him a knight. This was symbolic of what occurred in earlier times. In the earlier middle ages, the person doing the dubbing would actually hit the squire forcefully, knocking him over. After the dubbing, a great feast followed with music and dancing. "
Couldn't imagine the queen doing that

I would love it if someone did it to the queen, knocking her head clean from her shoulders.

I have read up on the ritual/procedure if you like but, the actual dubbing on the shoulder...can not
seem to find any purpose of that act. An ol' fella' from Yorkshire told me that it basically represented
along the lines of 'See my sword, your MY Knight, if you don't honor me I can have your head.'
