Author trying to update iphone - backup timing out

so i thought i best update my iphone, itunes is acknowledging that im plugging it in, its picking it up...starts backing up..gets to about half way through and the backup times out.

i can import my pics but cant do anything with my phone in itunes - running the latest itunes but phones still on ios4

any ideas?
