So I've gone across to the dark side and got myself a MacBook Pro yesterday, and have moved most of my stuff across from my old laptop.

I bought one of those Moshi Thunderbolt > HDMI adapters so that I can use the MBP with my monitor, but I can't seem to work out how you get it to ONLY display on the monitor? I've had to make the background black on one workspace and moved the menu bar etc. to the one used by my monitor - bit n00b I know but on my Samsung laptop all I had to do was connect the HDMI cable to the laptop and it just switched across automatically.

Not yet as I'm running the battery down before plugging in (it'll be its first charge).

I usually just turn the brightness down all the way on the mbp

Can you untick the display in the top right display menu?

Could 'Clamshell' the MBP? Basically set the external display to mirror and close the lid (obviously you'll need to connect a mouse and keyboard).

Bit more info - http://macsimplelife.blogspot.com/2009/08/macbook-pro-with-external-lcd-monitor.html

Looks like they 'fixed' the Clamshell in Lion; apparently the only current solution is to use a fridge magnet so Lion thinks the lid is closed

SwitchResX app is another option but it's a bodge job in that it just limits your mouse to your external display and puts a black background on your MBP display

And the Magnet fix on a Pre-Unibody -

Edit - Possibly another method - https://discussions.apple.com/message/16059565#16059565

I know if you shut it down, power it up again but close the lid it will work that way, however you'd need an external keyboard and mouse to do that obviously

I'm using an external keyboard and mouse too btw

Anyway after some research, I have done what was suggested at the bottom of this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190802?start=0&tstart=0

Rebooted, and with the MBP on charge just now I closed the lid, waited for it to go to sleep and woke it up again by pressing a keyboard key (with the lid still shut aka clamshell).

Seems to work now, but I'm guessing as Brett as said it needs to be on AC power for this to work, as I couldn't get it to work earlier without it being on charge?

So I can just charge whenever rather than waiting for it to be empty?

Yes this definitely only works when it's on AC power.

How annoying.

You can't charge them for longer than about 2 hours - they're electronically controlled so trying to do a long first charge isn't going to work very well. Also, it's allegedly kinder to the battery to do partial charges, so charging them from half is just fine. They don't have a 'memory' like old NiCd's that did need long first charges and regular full discharges

Ahh OK cool.

Also, is it a bad idea to leave it plugged in to AC power all day long?

Nope, once the battery reaches it's correct voltage charging will stop and the AC adaptor will simply power the computer.
