Did my first track day in years in my mates Saxo VTR last week at Oulton Park (Seen Ian while I was there too, bet its been nearly 10 years since I last saw him too!! )
Anyway I've been bitten by the bug again and while I don't have a fast road car at the minute a track car would scratch the itch for a while and also give me chance to get back into the bit I mainly enjoy about cars, tinkering! Down to the cars Ive had in the last few years Ive not been able to mess with them myself for a while!
Anyway, what should I get? I only really want to spend £3k max! Do I get a car thats half done or do it myself? Really fancy a Saxo VTS or a 106 GTI cos that thing I was in at weekend handled great (it just needed a few more horsepower really!) Needs to be a small car though as I need to fit in the missus' Smart for Four Which is 3750mm long and the garage is 8200 long. (think Saxos are about 3700 long so would leave me nearly a metre!
Cheers in advance!

How about a GTi6? Not many people think of them, and could get a half decent track 1 for that price.

Shame that you need something small to fit in the garage, otherwise i would have said a DC2 Integra without a doubt. 3k would get you a decent 1, with awesome handling out the box.

No question in my book, Clio 172 Cup for just under 2k and buy coilovers, decent tyres and ported inlets with the change.

Yeah thought about these too, suppose they don't need too much engine work doing either as they already have a fair bit of poke! How would you think they handle compared to the Saxo on track? Ill be honest I was really impressed with the Saxo!
Need a cage too for sure!!!

I would also pick a P1 RS Clio over P2 etc, cheaper to buy and look alot more hardcore. And you will have plenty change to throw at it.

Never driven a Saxo on track but the Clio I have driven at Oulton was cracking.
Pumas are popular at the moment too!

Think I may go down the 172 route!!
Reckon I can get a car for £1500, £500 rollcage, £500 suspension, two seats for £400, Harnesses £100 and a load of stripping out for free!

Was good to see you mate, sorry I didn't come back over later was too busy chasing lap times
172 is a popular choice and probably faster out the box than mine.
Whatever you pick make sure you get in touch if you're thinking of doing a day so we get a better price, loads of people there that we knew all of who booked individually, would be 10% cheaper if we got together.

In my increasingly biased opinion, a Civic
http://pistonheads.com/sales/3454148.htm
4060mm long btw
170bhp and diff from the factory.
Strip it out and you'll have a 900odd kg car with 180ish bhp that will take everything you can throw at it.

Clio 172. End thread.
I've just been offered a X plate with 102k for £900
As said with a £3k limit, 172 cup, upgrade suspension and brakes, exhaust and matched inlets. Perfect track car.

Don't bother with a cage, spend that money on decent tyres, R888s/AO48s etc.
