Those 2D bar code things, look like a grid of random pixels, you can point your phone at them and they'll take you to a web address, right?
Do you need special software on a typical modern phone?

For these things to take off, phone manufacturers need to include the QR Code reader in their camera app. Can you imagine explaining to your Mum how all this stuff works?

I don't think so, I'm sure Android is Java based and Windows is C#/++, I can't remember off top of my head though

I actually think that the latest Windows stuff is done using Silverlight - no idea what the scripting language is for that though.
Either way, there's the Android Marketplace and with Windows Marketplace - or something along those lines.

Microsoft can't decide what they want Silverlight to do / be.

There is one built into windows phone 7, click on the search button and click on the vision icon and you can scan for QR Codes and Microsoft Tags.

It doesn't really serve a purpose, especially as they've decided to start bumming HTML5, Javascript and CSS3

The open standards will always prevail.
So uptake is fairly good amongst, for example, people at a car show?

Large in Japan, they have massive bilboards with the 3d barcodes on so people can scan them as they go past on trains etc
also shop windows are full of them
